Roguelike Shooter Deadzone: Rogue just landed on Steam, but it’s a superbly polished take on the genre - not just another copycat.
We’re going to run through why this is a game that fully justifies the current slew of positive user reviews, and why it’s climbing rapidly up the Steam charts.
I, Robot
The plot is as simple as it gets, and that’s a very good thing. You wake up on spacecraft ISS-X with no memories of where you are, who you are, and what you’re supposed to be doing.
Your goal becomes very clear very quickly though - survive. That’s because there’s a horde of rogue machines approaching, and they don’t want a cup of tea and a chat.
Just in case you need us to spell it out - they want you dead.
Get Blastin’
So the main focus here are constant thrilling firefights, and this is an area in which Deadzone: Rogue excels.
First off, the arsenal. You have over 30 weapons to choose from, with each one having a range of uses - from tactical long range shooting (sniper) to close range combat (shotgun).
But it’s the way your guns can be upgraded and modified via a host of elemental affixes and upgrades that is really impressive.
You’ll want to keep playing just to see how your favourite weapon can be improved and tweaked. Especially when the combat itself is such a joy…
All Out Action
We don’t want to go into much detail as it would ruin the fun, but firefights are a constant pleasure to be involved with in Deadzone: Rogue.
The range of enemies might be a little bewildering in other shooters, but here they all have very distinct attack patterns - so mixing and matching them creates a huge number of combat scenarios, each one as thrilling as the last.
Add in the fact you have such a varied set of weapons to take them on with and you have a roguelite that nails the fundamentals so well you’ll keep coming back time after time.
Content Keeps on Coming
This early access build has two chapters to get your teeth into as well, with more to come. You can play the current content solo, or up to three player co-op is supported.
With a range of difficulty settings to choose from even novice shooter fans can get involved too. There’s even a dedicated Discord channel where you can chat to friendly players to discuss new strategies.
