Igor Babuschkin, xAI's head of engineering, stated that the problem developed as a result of an unauthorized modification of Grok's system prompt.
Users on X discovered that Grok had been told not to display results containing references to Musk and Trump spreading misinformation. Babuschkin further explained that the update was made by an anonymous ex-OpenAI employee at xAI without approval. His explanation was, "An employee pushed the change because they thought it would help, but this is obviously not in line with our values."
Musk has consistently positioned Grok as a "maximally truth-seeking" AI with the goal of understanding the universe.
