VR is mostly known for gimmicky titles or unique horror games, so it’s surprising to know that some Final Fantasy entries were pitched to the platform. Although these games didn’t end up coming out, an anonymous developer has revealed some interesting details about these axed projects.

YouTube personality lowkeymatt revealed that there were two major FF games pitched to Square for VR devices: Final Fantasy VII Remake VR and Final Fantasy VI Magitek Armor VR. Lowkeymatt also showed off footage of an unfinished Kingdom Hearts game, which you can read more about here.

Details on these two Final Fantasy VR projects are vague, so we aren’t sure if Final Fantasy VII Remake would have received the full VR treatment. Being able to use Cloud’s Buster Sword or Barrett’s gun arm in VR sounds pretty cool, but we can’t imagine a full 40-hour JRPG for the platform.

In contrast, Magitek Armor probably would have been a whole new sidegame that completely takes place in this entry’s iconic mech suit. Magitek Armor is seen a lot in the main game and making a linear shooting experience with them would have been plenty of fun. We think it’s a shame Square passed on this, given how much fans reminisce about the sixth entry.

At the time of writing, the only serious Final Fantasy VR game released has been the fishing game that ties in to Final Fantasy XV. Monster of the Deep: Final Fantasy XV turns the fishing mini-game into a full-blown title and it’s pretty decent for what it is, though still not a full-blown game.

Square Enix still hasn’t done much in the VR realm and we’re surprised that they haven’t made a more concentrated effort to do so. Then again, VR is still a very niche platform for most gamers and Square will go where the money is. Hopefully, we get a Final Fantasy VR game in the future.
