Google has removed its AI assistant, Gemini, from the main Google app on iOS devices, directing users to download the Gemini app separately. The move is intended to boost Google's position in the AI chatbot industry, allowing it to compete more effectively against ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity. However, this decision comes with potential risks, as many users may not be inclined to install a separate app, possibly limiting Gemini's reach.

The tech giant informed customers of the move via email, noting that "Gemini is no longer available in the Google app." Users who want to continue using Gemini on iOS should download the dedicated Gemini app from the App Store. The standalone app was released globally for iOS in November 2024 and offers complete access to Gemini's capabilities. These include features like Gemini Live for audio discussions, AI-powered travel planning, interactive summaries, and connection with Google devices like Search, YouTube, Gmail, and Maps.

Previously, iPhone users were allowed to access Gemini within the Google app using a switcher feature, but Google has been quietly pulling it out. When you press the Gemini button in the Google app, it says, "Gemini now has its own app," followed by a prompt to download it from the App Store.

This shift may streamline Google's AI development by focusing on a dedicated app, allowing for faster feature rollouts. However, it also risks reducing engagement, as many users prefer combined app experiences instead of installing new ones. Google is betting on the standalone Gemini app, which offers enough value to convince users to make the switch.

For people who want to access premium AI features, the Gemini app now includes Gemini Advanced, available via the Google One AI Premium plan. Meanwhile, Google has reminded users that Gemini's responses could still be inaccurate and should be fact-checked.

While this approach could improve the overall Gemini experience on iOS, its success will ultimately be determined by users' willingness to download yet another standalone AI app in an already crowded digital ecosystem.
