Google recently launched an AI-powered feature called "Ask for Me," which conducts routine conversations on users' behalf.
This experimental technology, available via Google Search Labs, allows AI to call local businesses and inquire about pricing and availability.
The feature was initially limited to nail salons and auto shops, but Google said it would soon expand to include additional businesses.

Users must activate the functionality in Search Labs to use "Ask for Me." When searching for a local nail salon or mechanic, an "Ask for Me" will appear. If selected, the AI will ask questions like the type of car needed for a service request or the preferred appointment time.
Users must enter contact information, such as an email address or phone number, to get updates.
The product builds upon Google's existing AI calling technology, Duplex, which previously enabled restaurant reservations and appointment bookings.
According to Google product lead Rose Yao, "Ask for Me" automates information-collection conversations while being transparent.
When making a call, the AI makes it obvious that it is an automated system calling from Google on behalf of a user.
Businesses can opt out of getting these calls via their Google Business Profile Settings. Alternatively, users can ask Google to stop calling when they receive a call.
Google also implements call quotas to prevent excessive inquiries and ensure businesses are not overwhelmed. Any information gathered during these interactions could be used to assist other users with similar requests.
Despite the convenience, there are concerns regarding how firms will handle AI-powered calls. When Duplex was first introduced, some businesses were caught off guard and confused. Similarly, with "Ask for Me," salons and mechanics might initially perceive AI calls as spam. If they engage, the AI can understand their responses conversationally and return the information to the user.

This feature is part of Google's broader push into AI-powered automation. The company has been integrating AI into its most recent products, including Gemini, an AI research assistant that waits on hold during customer service calls. Ask for Me furthers this trend, making everyday tasks more efficient.
However, its success depends on user uptake and business collaboration. While some may appreciate the ease, others may be uncomfortable interacting with automated calls.
Seeing how businesses and customers interact with the transition to AI-powered communication will be interesting as Google improves this technology.
