The Nintendo Switch 2 is shaping up to be a significant advancement of the hybrid console. New leaked patents hint at an unexpected feature: Joy-Cons that function as a computer mouse.
While Nintendo hasn't yet confirmed this feature, official patent filings indicate that the company is exploring ways to enhance Joy-Con's versatility beyond traditional gaming.
Joy-Cons with Mouse Functionality?
A newly published patent describes a "novel input device" that looks like a Joy-Con and is used in a mouse-like fashion. The document, filed in August 2023 and made public on Thursday, shows how the Joy-Con can be placed face down on a surface, with the user's fingers resting on the shoulder buttons and their thumb on the joystick—an ergonomic grip similar to that of a traditional computer mouse.

The patent also describes a light-detecting sensor on the Joy-Con's inner side that can operate like a modern optical mouse. This invention could lead to smoother pointer-based controls, improving menu navigation, browsing, and even gaming mechanics in strategy and MOBA titles.
Additional diagrams suggest that players could use two Joy-Cons in mouse mode at the same time, as well as mixed traditional mouse-style controls. This could introduce new gameplay experiences similar to Nintendo's past inventions, like Wii motion controls and Labo experiments.
Magnetic Attachment & Charging Dock
Beyond the mouse functionality, the patent aligns with previous rumors that the Switch 2 Joy-Cons will ditch the original rail system in favor of magnetic attachment. Instead of sliding onto a rail, these controllers will snap into place using magnets embedded in both the Joy-Cons and the console itself. This could result in a more secure and seamless connection.
Another intriguing detail from the patent is a potential standalone charging dock. If accomplished, Joy-Cons charge autonomously instead of being attached to the console.
What’s Next?

With a Nintendo Direct scheduled for April 2, fans are eagerly awaiting the official confirmation of these features. If Joy-Con mouse functionality becomes a reality, it could redefine how users interact with the Switch 2 both in and outside gaming.
