Microsoft is officially retiring its Remote Desktop app for Windows on May 27, 2025.

The app, currently available in the Microsoft Store, will no longer be supported or available for download after this date.

Users relying on it to connect to Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, or Microsoft Dev Box must upgrade to the new Windows app to keep access.

The Windows app, introduced in September 2024, will replace the Remote Desktop app and offers several enhancements.

Unlike its predecessor, the Windows app offers a unified interface for accessing multiple Windows services, including cloud PCs and virtual desktops.

Microsoft has confirmed that connections to Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Microsoft Dev Box via Remote Desktop app will be blocked after May 27, 2025.

While the Remote Desktop app will be discontinued, Microsoft's long-standing Remote Desktop Connection app, built into Windows for over 20 years, will continue to work. Users connecting to remote desktops can continue to use the Remote Desktop Connection until RDP support is integrated into the Windows app.

The Windows app introduces several improvements, including unified access to numerous Windows services via a single interface, multi-monitor compatibility, and dynamic display resolution adjustment. It also increases the remote work experience with device redirection, Microsoft Teams enhancements, and fast account switching.

Microsoft requests users should follow these steps to ensure a smooth transition:

  • Download the Windows app from the Microsoft Store or Microsoft's official website.
  • Read the setup guides for Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Microsoft Dev Box.
  • Use Remote Desktop Connection for remote desktop services until the Windows app supports them. Track known issues in the Windows app to stay up-to-date on feature developments.

IT administrators should begin updating internal documentation and guiding users through the transition. Microsoft's move aligns with its broader vision of cloud-based computing, paving the way for AI-powered services and a more seamless digital experience.
