NotebookLM Plus

Google has officially expanded NotebookLM Plus, an AI-powered notetaking and research assistant, available to individual Google One AI Premium subscribers. This comes roughly two months after the premium version was first made available to enterprises via Google Cloud and Google Workspace.

Notebook LM Plus, which was first offered in December 2024 after an early pilot phase, enhances the original version by offering significantly higher usage limits and premium features. Users can now create up to 500 notebooks, attach 300 sources per notebook, and execute 500 chat queries daily. Additionally, the service allows up to 20 AI-generated audio summaries every day, which is five times the capacity of the free version.

Individual users can access these benefits by subscribing to the Google One AI Premium Plan for $20 per month. To make the platform more accessible, Google has introduced a 50% student discount in the US, allowing eligible students aged 18 and above to sign up for $9.99 per month.

NotebookLM first garnered considerable attention in 2023 and became particularly popular after introducing the Audio Overviews feature in September 2024. It allows users to create podcast-like audio chats from uploaded content. Competing AI firms, such as ElevenLabs and Meta, have since developed similar solutions. Google is continuing to enhance this function by adding support for additional languages and ensuring natural, high-quality AI-generated audio experiences.

Kelly Schaefer, Director of Product at Google Labs, stressed the company's commitment towards increasing the capabilities of NotebookLM, including the creation of a dedicated mobile app. While no release date has been confirmed yet, Schaefer stated that the mobile experience aims to replicate the desktop interface while optimizing for mobile-specific use cases.

NotebookLM Plus is currently available globally to Google One AI Premium users, who also get Gemini Advanced, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, and 2TB of Google Drive storage. Despite this premium tier, Google promised consumers that the free version would remain stable, delivering a high-quality experience for all users. Although Google hasn't published user numbers, market intelligence reports indicate around 9 million visits in January alone, indicating a growing interest in AI-powered research tools.
