- Quick Answer: OpenAI has cancelled its controversial 'adult mode' for ChatGPT due to child safety and misuse concerns.
It may still be too early to say that the AI bubble has burst, but after OpenAI officially confirmed they'll be shutting down Sora and losing a $1 billion investment from Disney in the process, the company confirmed they'll be scrapping plans for a ChatGPT "adult mode."
The frankly bizarre and creepy idea wasn't even well-received by advisors that OpenAI had rounded earlier in the year to discuss the idea of a feature that treated ChatGPT users as "adults." It's clear they didn't manage to stick the landing internally on what the "adult mode" should look like.
Such a concept was initially revealed back in October 2025, initially slated for release at some point during Q1 2026 before being delayed this past December. Luckily for every internet user, it's now completely shelved.

The idea was terrible, and the fact that even people close to OpenAI were wary of it from the beginning was the biggest red flag a feature could have coming from a company that already lacks the morals and flagrantly stole copyrighted content with things like Sora, which is also now thankfully going away.
Dangers of child safety and overall potential misuses of the feature led to OpenAI to simply scrap it. One of the biggest reasons cited by the advisors was that it could turn ChatGPT into a "sexy suicide coach," considering AI tends to statistically find a way to always agree with the user, no matter how wrong they are.
