Apple's effort to integrate generative AI into Siri has faced some challenges.
According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the company struggles to transform Siri into a modern conversational assistant.
While updates are expected, a fully developed AI-powered Siri may not be available until iOS 20 in 2027.

Despite these difficulties, Apple aims to release an improved Siri in May 2025, incorporating long-awaited features of Apple Intelligence. This version, however, is expected to be a hybrid, with a "two-brain" system handling typical Siri commands like setting timers and another managing AI-powered queries. This structure would initially result in inconsistencies as the two systems function separately.
Apple's roadmap suggests a more unified and smooth Siri, initially called "LLM Siri," that will be available with iOS 19. However, this version won't be available until at least spring 2026. The full-fledged, next-generation Siri, with increased conversational abilities and broad connectivity across Apple's ecosystem, is projected to debut with iOS 20.
The delay in offering a true AI Siri highlights Apple's overall AI challenges. According to Gurman, internal company data indicates that Apple Intelligence capabilities are now receiving "extremely low" real-world usage, mainly due to their limited functionality. Siri's lack of modern AI-powered features has added to its stagnation compared to competitors like Google Assistant and ChatGPT-based assistants.

Apple has recently reassigned senior software executive Kim Vorrath to the AI and machine learning division to speed up the development. However, sources suggest that internal setbacks will jeopardize the employment of John Giannandrea, Apple's senior vice president of machine learning and AI strategy.
While Apple remains committed to AI-driven enhancements, anyone looking for a cutting-edge Siri experience will have to wait a few more years. Until then, incremental updates will try to close the gap, but completely revamped Siri won't be available until at least 2027.
