Fighting games are popping off, and indie fighters are just as much a part of that renaissance as any other. Recently, at the Latin American Games Showcase, Daybreak Slam caught the eyes of many fans, especially since a demo just dropped on Steam for players to try out.
Developed by Chilean studio AOne Games, Daybreak Slam is a 2.5D 1v1 fighter that's full of whimsy and advertises itself as an easy-to-pick-up title, perfect for beginners. The cast includes an aptly sized T. rex and a rectangular sentient entity named Narumi. It also features some incredible-looking skins, meaning you can play as a Japanese vending machine or a human-sized, Game Boy-like handheld.
What piqued my interest in Daybreak Slam is the sheer amount of love and effort being poured into it. The developers have created 12 stages that can be customized in a variety of ways, including day/night versions, charming pixel art, or a retro low-poly style that will remind uncs of early 3D games like Virtua Fighter.
There's a whole collectibles section with Smash-like trophies and even mini-games that really sell you on the aesthetic behind the game. As for the gameplay, it looks to be much more nuanced than you might think, featuring multiple gauges to keep track of and deep defensive mechanics, which I deeply appreciate.
I haven't tried the demo myself yet, but once I do, I'll be sure to give you my hands-on impressions of Daybreak Slam. And yes, it's got rollback netcode.
