Fortnite Isn't Coming to VR Headsets like Meta Quest Anytime Soon

Fortnite is arguably the most popular game in the world right now. Joining the ranks of Minecraft and Grand Theft Auto, Fortnite has become a household name and is available on a seemingly endless array of platforms, making it a truly accessible game. However, if you're a Fortnite fan hoping for a potential VR mode of the battle royale game, you'll have to wait a long time.

Despite the increased accessibility of some of the best VR headsets, such as the affordable and standalone Meta Quest series, Fortnite is suprisingly absent from the VR gaming scene. Whether you check the lists of the best PCVR games or the best Meta Quest 3 games, Fortnite isn’t on them.

And that’s not going to change anytime soon. According to Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, there are "no plans currently" to bring Fortnite to the popular Quest headsets or any VR headsets at all.

In response to a user on Twitter asking about the possibility of Fortnite on Quest, Sweeney said, "No plans currently. For it to be successful we’d need a lot of players across all platforms spending a lot of their time on islands whose locomotion mechanics wouldn’t have VR players barfing."

"We’ve gone from 0 to 1 such popular mechanics but it’s not a critical mass yet," Sweeney added. You can technically play Fortnite in VR using Praydog's UEVR mod, which turns flatscreen games into virtual reality experiences, but the comfort level is... not great.

However, it's encouraging that Sweeney hasn’t ruled out a potential VR port entirely. VR currently suffers from a lack of big IPs in the market, and while titles like Batman Arkham Shadow and Hitman 3 VR on the Quest may attract some players to virtual reality, Fortnite could be a highly convincing title for many to invest in the best headsets.

With Fortnite’s range of game modes evolving into a metaverse-style experience, it could be feasible to create a VR-exclusive mode or version of the game without impacting the standard Fortnite experience. In any case, we hope Fortnite comes to VR in the future, even if it’s focused on Creative maps.
