  • Quick Answer: This article introduces Irongroot Games, a new indie studio founded by experienced developers, and their debut title, Project Mourning, a single-player action-adventure solarpunk game.

Irongroot Games was just unveiled at the Insider Gaming Showcase. This brand-new independent studio comprises former developers who've worked on The Last of Us, The Elder Scrolls, and the Uncharted franchise, and who are now creating Project Mourning Reign.

An incredibly small teaser was shown at the event. Lush greenery can be seen around a derelict control tower of sorts, very reminiscent of The Last of Us' overall vibe, which merged gorgeous scenic natural landscapes with the gruesomeness of a post-apocalyptic world.

We can't really infer if Project Mourning will have a similar tone, of course, but it was a pretty, extremely early first look at it. As mentioned, the studio has some serious pedigree behind it, including founder Quentin Cobb, who has years of experience working as a game designer at Naughty Dog and, more recently, at Zenimax.

Cobb explained that during his tenure at Zenimax, he worked for over four years on an unannounced project that was eventually canceled, resulting in his and several colleagues' layoffs in late 2025.

During an interview with Insider Gaming, Cobb went on to explain that, at the time, Irongroot Games didn't really have the monetary muscle to pay full salaries, working "for the love of the game," while their first project came along.

As for what the game actually is, it's a single-player action-adventure solarpunk story. It will take inspiration directly from the very first Uncharted. Cobb did temper expectations: "It won't be that big, it won't be at that scope, but something that is an incredible story with great characters and compelling world."
