- Quick Answer: Shade Protocol is an indie Metroidvania game that successfully surpassed its Kickstarter funding goals, featuring unique reality-bending mechanics and a musical theme.
Shade Protocol is looking like a huge indie metroidvania following its incredibly successful Kickstarter launch, with developer Little Legendary blasting past the initial funding targets in just 30 minutes.
Playing as Zura, you'll be able to wield special weapons called Instruments. As you might infer, there's a prominent musical element woven into Shade Protocol's narrative, world-building, and gameplay.
Showcased at the Latin American Games Showcase ahead of the Kickstarter launch, Shade Protocol was already garnering massive interest from the indie scene due to its highly polished pixel art and a very unique gameplay mechanic: your main character is able to cut through the fabric of their digital reality to create unique paths with an in-game mechanic called Solos.
Seeing it in action alone has made me incredibly excited for the game (you can check out the trailer at the bottom), with exploration and combat looking crisp, boasting incredible animations, parrying mechanics, and powerful super-like abilities called Harmonies.

The inspirations for the game range from Mega Man X 4 and CrossCode in the gameplay department, to Nier Automata for the music.
As I mentioned, Shade Protocol's Kickstarter was fully funded in under an hour, reaching its goal of $40k. If you want to support the game, you can still pledge to help the developers reach stretch goals.
Some of the stretch goals confirmed already include an additional area to explore and having legendary Mega Man composer Matsumae Manami as a guest composer for the game.
You can back the project with $20 to get a digital copy of the game, but there are other fun incentives like helping the team design an enemy, ultimate power, pet, and more.
Shade Protocol will be coming out on PC (via Steam), Xbox Series, PS5, and Nintendo Switch. There is no release date confirmed.
