- Quick Answer: We praise Mina The Hollower's extensive and well-implemented accessibility options, arguing they are a positive aspect of the game.
Mina the Hollower's accessibility options are absolutely perfect, and Yacht Club should be commended for paying so much attention to detail in them rather than being criticized by critics.
If you've been out of the loop, the highly anticipated Mina the Hollower, a tribute to Game Boy Color action-adventure games, mixed with modern gameplay sensibilities and challenging encounters similar to Souls-likes (I'm not joking), is right around the corner, releasing this upcoming May 29 on every modern platform.
As I stated in my preview, the game is incredibly challenging, with its punishing gameplay potentially being a turn-off for a portion of the playerbase that might have gotten charmed by the quaint pixelated art that departs from what indie developers usually pay tribute to.

Yacht Club Games revealed this past May 15 a comprehensive suite of options that players can use to customize their experience, both making the challenge harder and easing it.
Want to reduce the speed of the game to make it past a certain platforming section that requires precise timing? You can do it. Want extra checkpoints? No problem. It's designed in a way that it doesn't invalidate the experience if you want to tinker with it slightly, but you can also turn Mina into an invincible force of nature if you choose to go that route.
In any case, as you might expect (or not, if you're a well-adjusted individual), this freedom of choice caused quite the stir on social media, with "fans" criticizing the fact that Yacht Club wants everyone, from experienced action-adventure enthusiasts to those dipping their toes for the first time, with a very charming-looking retro title.
Why oh why do developers insist on bending the knee instead of committing to a singular vision? This speaks badly of the studio, they continued, stating that they didn't believe in their mechanics and gameplay structure. To that I say: why do you care so much?
I've been playing and adoring every second of Mina the Hollower, and haven't touched a single modifier, as I'm reserving that for my NG+ run. What if someone wants to tack on a few of them to make their life easier across Tenebrous Isle? How does that affect my enjoyment of the game? I don't need the validation of online strangers, patting my virtual back because I was tough enough to beat a game without making it easier.

The game is pretty well balanced. It is hard, don't get me wrong, but never unfair, it can get under your skin at times, yet that didn't really make me throw my hands up in the air and be "ah well, Yacht Club really couldn't be bothered balancing their game, this feels atrocious," because quite frankly, every death I've suffered is simply a skill issue.
In any case, all those complaints are invalidated as certain achievements will be disabled if you enable some of these modifiers. So, why were these players up in arms in the first place? Only they know the answer.
Accessibility is great, and it should always be celebrated.
